First up is mineral oil. It is obtained from refining crude petroleum. The oil then goes through various filtrations to remove all the unwanted hydrocarbons and natural contaminants. Mineral oil is generally suitable for older cars that were developed in times where technology runs on less advanced lubricants. Besides that, mineral oil is the cheapest among the two other motor oils. However, more frequent oil changes are required to maintain your engine in tip-top shape.
Next are the differences between mineral oil and synthetic oil. Compared to mineral oil, synthetic oil be it fully or semi synthetic are designed for high performance car engines. Synthetic oils are motor oils that have gone through a complex chemical enhancement and transformations. For both types of synthetic oil (semi & fully) additives are included in them that significantly boost up their overall performance that can protect your car engine from wear, corrosion, oxidation and much more.
Generally, fully synthetic oils are more expensive compared to semi-synthetic and also minerals. This is because, manufacturer tends to add on better quality additives compared to the others to provide a more quality finish to the final product. However, the basic functions are still found in semi-synthetic oil.
One thing to be clear from all of this is that not all oil types are suitable for any type of car. Car owners must do their own research or better yet just ask information regarding which motor oil is best suited for your vehicle.
